A dental crown is a protective tooth-shaped covering that is placed over a tooth in order to restore its shape, size and strength and to improve its overall appearance.

A dental crown fully encloses the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.

Why Is a Dental Crown Needed?

A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:

To protect a weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth

To restore a broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down through chewing or grinding.

To secure a dental bridge

To cover damage or severely discolored teeth

To cover a dental implant

To make cosmetic adjustments

To cover and reinforce a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of tooth left

A damaged tooth, whether cracked, chipped, broken or decayed can not only be protected with a dental crown, but as well, have its original shape, size, color and feel restored so that it functions as it did before and looks natural.   All-Porcelain crowns provide the best natural color.   They protect the remaining tooth and are bonded, compared to being cemented, for a greater bond with the natural teeth. Properly cared for All-porcelain crowns can be expected to last 10, 15, or more years.

Fitting a crown requires at least two visits to our office.   Initially, we will remove decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with a temporary crown.

On the subsequent visit, we will remove the temporary crown, and then fit and adjust the final porcelain crown. Finally, we will bond the crown into place giving you a new beautiful looking tooth.
