Today, the appearance of your teeth can be improved through a variety of procedures. Of course good oral hygiene and routine oral exams and cleanings are important in keeping your teeth in good shape. However, you still may not be happy with the way your teeth look, whether they’re chipped, stained, irregularly shaped or cosmetically flawed otherwise. If this is the case, dental veneers may be right for you.
Veneers can serve more than just a cosmetic purpose; they can also protect damaged teeth from further harm.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are very thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth. We use porcelain veneers because the porcelain material looks the most natural. Porcelain veneers are mostly translucent and they reflect light in a way that closely simulates natural teeth.
Are Dental Veneers Right for You?
If your teeth are stained or discolored, veneers can be used to cover them up, as opposed to teeth whitening which is intended to remove stains from your teeth. Veneers can also be used to conceal other flaws such as small gaps between teeth, teeth discoloration, uneven teeth or misaligned teeth. Porcelain veneers, once in place, cannot easily be removed as they are permanently bonded to the teeth. So any improvement you’d like to make to your teeth, if you opt for veneers, you have to be willing to make a permanent change to your smile.
Porcelain veneers are custom-designed for each person. Dr. Bernard Lynch will carefully examine the affected teeth to make sure the correct veneers are designed. During the process of design, a digital scanner is used to make impressions of the mouth. Dr. Bernard Lynch’s goal is to create wafer-thin veneers that fit as naturally as possible over the existing teeth. When porcelain veneers are correctly designed, it’s virtually impossible to detect.
What to Expect
What happens when you get porcelain veneers?
The veneer procedure begins with a consultation with Dr. Bernard Lynch where you can discuss what your goals and expectations are. Sometimes a person needs to have additional dental work done prior to the veneers procedure, so any necessary treatment will be handled first. Once it is determined that you’re a good candidate for veneers, examinations will be taken such as dental impressions or imaging to make a full assessment of your dental needs. Based on your needs, Dr. Bernard Lynch will determine whether the veneers can be made in office or sent off to a dental lab.
A small amount of enamel will be removed from your teeth then the teeth will then be cleaned, polished and etched, which makes the surface rougher to facilitate more secure bonding. Before applying the cement that will bond the veneers to your teeth, Dr. Bernard Lynch will place the custom veneers to ensure that they fit properly; he may need to trim or otherwise adjust the veneers, but this shouldn’t take long. Once Dr. Bernard Lynch is confident about the placement, cement will be applied and the veneers will be positioned. A light will then be used to permanently bond the veneers to the teeth. When the cement is completely hardened and the veneers are successfully bonded, he will remove excess cement from your teeth and evaluate your bite to ensure it not only looks right but feels comfortable and natural.
Porcelain veneers are resistant to stains, but it is very important that you continue to practice good oral hygiene. Come in for regular oral exams and follow Dr. Bernard Lynch’s advice. Give our office in Burke, VA a call today to set up an appointment, and find out if veneers are right for you.
