The first step in smile design is a comprehensive evaluation. Dr. Bernard Lynch will conduct a physical examination to inspect the patient’s teeth, gums, jaw joints and muscles, looking for signs of decay, stress, or instability. Any problems should be corrected prior to having Digital Smile Design because those same problems are likely to recur if they are simply masked with dental work. Additionally, he studies a patient’s facial appearance, including the symmetry of features, size of the lips and mouth, and skin tone and texture to make sure that the cosmetic changes will look natural. Digital photos and video are taken of the teeth and entire mouth from multiple angles. As well, Dr. Bernard Lynch takes diagnostic scans and x-rays of the teeth to aid in the next step, treatment planning.

Dr. Bernard Lynch will create a 2-D design, which is mocked up from using all the information gathered in Step 1. From there, the design is calibrated to the patient in order to build a 3-D model, which demonstrates and test how the changes will function.

Once the planning is complete, both Dr. Bernard Lynch and the patient review the photos and videos taken in Step 1. Once they have agreed on the treatment course, the patient’s teeth and mouth will begin to be prepped for the restoration and a provisional (a temporary mock up) is created which will begin to duplicate the anticipated results. Molds are taken after the teeth have been prepared then Dr. Bernard Lynch applies a prototype, which is a tooth-colored plastic version of the final restoration. Testing the prototypes in the mouth gives Dr. Bernard Lynch and the patient an opportunity to observe how the final restoration will function and feel. In this way, the patient can “test drive” the new restorations, before they are actually completed. Up to this point, adjustments and changes can be made to the prototype to ensure that the final dental restoration will be a “perfect” fit.

Dr. Bernard Lynch establishes a plan to complete Step 3. The final restoration, whether it is a dental crown, porcelain veneer or dental bridge, will be created at a state-of-the-art dental laboratory to Dr. Bernard Lynch exact specifications

Because of this thorough digital smile design process, the final restoration is not guesswork, but a precise, predictable result — one that not only feels comfortable but also looks natural, and functions optimally.

The length of time to complete all four steps of the digital smile design varies from patient to patient, depending on their needs and personal goals. The process can be as quick as a few weeks for someone with minor changes and functional concerns to months for someone who needs intensive treatment.
